FAQ

Is Japanese-language ability necessary?

Basic spoken English and Chinese are available at most venues, but advance notice is required for other languages, which are arranged case by case. For large wedding groups especially, adding an interpreter to the plan will ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Can a foreign couple receive a legal notification of marriage in Japan (Certificate of Acceptance of Notification of Marriage)?

Yes, and many wedding planners are very familiar with the process required.
Couples from overseas can receive a Certificate of Acceptance of Notification of Marriage by submitting a marriage notification to a municipal-government office in Japan and requesting the aforementioned certificate from the office where the marriage notification was filed. The documentation needed to file a marriage notification varies by nationality so please check with the applicable country’s consulate for each partner regarding the legal requirements to marry in Japan.

How far in advance do we need to plan our wedding in Japan?

The planning time frame for a wedding in Japan depends on the time of year, the day (weekday, weekend, or national holiday), the location, the wedding type and activities desired, and the venue. Since each wedding is unique, it is hard to provide a concrete time frame. In some cases, you may need to make reservations six months to a year in advance, but in others, you may be able to do it at the last minute.

Summer:

Japan’s Obon holiday is typically celebrated around August 13 to 15, so reserve well in advance if you are planning a wedding celebration at this time.
